Southcentral Alaska Fishing
Southcentral is in the heart of Alaska containing the main road system for our state. The region is comprised of Alaska’s largest city, Anchorage, all the way south to the Kenai Peninsula. To the north of Anchorage, the Mat-su Valley all the way to the north of Glennallen and east to the Canadian border also are part of the Southcentral Alaska region.
Prince William Sound with the seaside towns of Whittier, Valdez, and Cordova are found in Southcentral. Kachemak Bay, surrounding the port town of Homer, is known as the Halibut Capital of the World. Its accessibility to the Kenai River area make this one of Alaska’s easiest “do-it-all” destinations. They are all part of Southcentral on the road system. Visit several towns in the region for a viable trip itinerary.
Starting an Alaska fishing trip to Southcentral most often means a flight to the Ted Stevens International Airport in Anchorage. You can also access Prince William Sound via the Alaska Marine Highway ferry system but most people choose to fly in. Once arriving Anchorage, you can rent a car at the airport or private rentals through Truro. You can book an RV for your trip and head north or south. Some choose to jump on one more short flight to the Kenai or Homer airport and focus their time on the Peninsula.

The drives north or south from Anchorage are beautiful and the fishing is good in both directions. If you want saltwater fishing as part of your trip you can head to the Kenai Peninsula or take the stunning road trip east to Valdez. The drive itself in either direction is worth it with many stops along the way to admire Alaska’s mic drop backdrop. The closest saltwater port to Anchorage is just an hour south in Whittier. This is a great option for taking home some freezer bounty of halibut and bottom fish and for a fishing adventure for the books.
